This is from her book Stripped. I am not a huge fan of poetry. Most of it just goes over my head. However, there is something about the way Cara writes that speaks to me. When I read this passage, I want to be this woman! This woman who has a powerful mind and an internal light that motivates and builds up others! It makes me want to move past being average in my life and see what great things I can accomplish. I would love to make an impact on this world and leave it a better place for my children and their families.
I Need to Become This Woman
So, how can I do this? I am still searching for those answers. But to start, I can be more kind. I can look to see how I can help others instead of focusing on what is wrong in my world. I can be more appreciative of the things I do have while still working for the things I want. I can build others up and celebrate other’s successes instead of looking to see where I am not! I can give back to my community because I am truly blessed. I can try to be a positive force in a world filled with negativity.
5 Small Steps to Make a Difference
These are lofty goals for sure. But here are some steps that I am taking that might be helpful to you.
1. Wake up early
I wake up at least 20 minutes before I everyone else in the house. I usually like to have longer, but it has been cold and my bed is so warm. This gives me time to have my morning coffee, have some me time, and I use this to focus on one thing I am grateful for the day. I have a gratitude section in my day planner and I write at least one thing every day that I am grateful for in my life. This starts my day in a positive light.
2. Exercise and Eating well
I have started exercising again. I try to get at least 3 days a week where I do cardio and get my blood moving. Even if it is just a walk around my neighborhood, I like to do this now. It clears my head, gives me some endorphins, and fitting into my clothes better is just a bonus. I also have cut back on fast food and opted for healthier options.
3. Daily Self-Development
I listen to self-development books at least 20 to 30 minutes a day. There are some fantastic books out there that have helped me with confidence, positivity, getting over things, etc. Click here for a list of some of my favorites.
I lived with my calendar in my younger days. I let that go once I had kids because as a stay home mom, I just needed to know where my play dates were and what time. Now that they in school, I am involved in school activities, on the PTA board, and run my business from home. If I don’t write it down and have a plan for the next day, my days get away from me. I even plan my writing time so I can keep a decent schedule. I do it in erasable pens because I do need flexibility! These are my favorites. I usually spend about ten minutes before bed mapping out my next day.
5. Take time for ME
When life gets me down during the day, I have decided that it is totally OK to take a step back, revamp my day, or just take some “me” time! I feel like having time to take care of myself is the ONLY way that I can take care of others.
