I have a gift. I can speak in public. I can come up with some funny antics, get my point across, and present information to a group that will not put them to sleep. I did product trainings for a company that few trainers that ever received a “no improvement needed” feedback review. I got 2 perfect scores. That was pretty much unheard of with that company! But I have done it and can do it!! That is, I can do it for a group of strangers or acquaintances. When I try the same with a group of my friends or family, I clam up.
Why is it I can be this person to people that I don’t know well but cannot do the same for those I am closest to me. Then it hit me – THEY KNOW ME!!! If I embellish a story for impact, they know. If I lose my train of thought and bobble a bit, they know. Anything I could try to gloss over, they know! For those that know me well, I am an open book and easily to read. This has become a challenge for me because my current business is all about relationships with my customers. It is my favorite part of what I do! But, how do I continue to educate my customers (now friends) when I have this issue holding me back?
Over the last fews weeks, I have really pondering this dilemma. For me to continue doing what I love had to come up with some solutions. Here are some things I have come up with.
I have written a blog post (you can see it here) about some of my favorite personal development books. I truly believe that there is something written by someone smarter than me that has already figured out whatever it is I need help with. I do not need to recreate the wheel. I will most likely need to update this soon!
Do it scared and get over myself.
When I see a friend’s name pop up as watching on a FB live instead of freaking out and think “she is going to see right through me” I have started thinking “WOW, she is taking the time out to watch me”. I have stopped worrying about what might go wrong and just know if something does, we will most likely just laugh about it!! Mindset is so important. I have written a note to myself to remind myself of this while doing lives. As the great Jen Sincero says “What you focus on becomes your reality”. I am focusing on the positive!!!
This one I am working on. I want my VIP group, blog, and other venues to add value to my customers, clients, friends, etc. I do not want to be known as a big informercial! I enjoy teaching and training so this is right up my ally. I noticed that when I shifted my focus on me, what could go wrong, or just nerves to how can I help my friends with this, I have started to enjoy myself again!
I would love to know what tricks you have for getting past the hurdles you place in your life!
